A fun day in memory of a popular Islander raised more than £1,000 at the weekend.

Irene Dunn, of New Road, Minster, known as Bubbles to her friends, died aged 64 of a pulmonary embolism in November last year.

She had been a swimming teacher for many years and a keen darts player for most of her adult life.

Sunday’s fundraiser at the Sheerness East Working Men’s Club in Halfway marked the first anniversary of her death.

It included face painting, a raffle and a darts competition.

The fun activities raised £1,055 for Diabetes UK, the charity nominated by Bubbles to benefit from donations at her funeral.

Mum-of-one Leigh-Ann Stanton, from New Road, Minster, who organised the fundraiser, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic, brilliant day.
