A primary school says it is having to make its dinner ladies redundant due to cuts in government funding.

Letters have been sent to parents and carers today, explaining the changes at St George's Primary School in Chequers Road, Minster, Sheppey.

It is not yet known how many staff members are affected, but they will be leaving the school at the end of the July.

The letters, sent from head of school Louise Rowley-Jones, said: "I am sure you are aware of the current educational climate and the cuts that schools are facing due to government funding.

"Here at St George's we have tried our best to minimise the effect of these cuts on pupils and staff despite the severity of some of the issues we have faced.

"Unfortunately, in order for us to remain secure as a school for the future, we have now reached a point where we have had to make redundancies of some of our staff.

"We have sadly had to make the decision to remove all of our mid-day meals supervisors from September.

"Their roles will now be carried out by teaching assistants who will take a different lunchtime to ensure we maintain our high levels of support and safeguarding during lunchtimes."

Mrs Rowley-Jones added it had been a difficult decision and time for all staff at the school and that they would bid a fond farewell to the mid-day meals supervisors at the end of the summer-term.
