Lack of evidence over tortoise killing

Despite a number of names being passed onto the RSPCA in the search for the killer of Fred the tortoise, officers are unable to catch the perpetrator.

Last week we reported that the RSPCA had been given a number of leads to follow, and they were hopeful of getting a conviction.

But RSPCA chief inspector Steve Dockery said: “Both the police and the RSPCA have exhausted all lines of inquiry at this stage an followed up all given information to date.

“We are unable to progress any further so the matter is not closed unless further information comes to light.”

The news came as a shock to Sheppey RSPCA chairman Angela Walder.

She said: “We have been given two names on more than one occasion and therefore it is our belief these people are involved in this incident.

“It is the view of the local branch of the RSPCA is that this matter will be followed up until it reaches a successful conclusion.

“In order for this to go to court, we need more evidence.”

Angela is still appealing for information so please report it if you do know anything. Phone the RSPCA 0300 123 4999.
