Royal Mail chiefs have apologised for an error which led to people thinking a delivery worker had been attacked by a dog.

Deliveries to Estuary Road in Sheerness were temporarily cut earlier this month after residents received a letter saying a postal worker had been attacked by a loose animal.

But, announcing deliveries were now being phased back in last week, a Royal Mail spokesman confirmed there had been an administrative error.

They said: "Having looked into this in more detail, we are sorry to note there was an administrative error in the letter that was sent to residents.

"The letter should have stated deliveries were being suspended because a large dog on the loose posed a significant risk of attack to colleagues."

They added that the firm’s policy for delivery suspension procedures remain the same for both an actual dog attack, as well as for the recurring threat of an attack.

The dog is thought to have been a rottweiler and was discovered loose in the street.

"We are sorry to note there was an administrative error in the letter that was sent to residents..."

Arrangements were made to allow residents to pick up their post from the firm’s sorting office in Broadway, Sheerness.

At the time, neighbour Butch Stanton - who lives in the road affected - said: "There's a lot of old people around there.

"We have to go and get our post every day now.

"It's easy for me but there's old people there who might be waiting for letters from the hospital."
