A letter has been issued to parents warning them of a man, dressed as a police officer, approaching two girls on their way to a secondary school.

They were in Halfway Road, near Stones Garden Centre, on their way from Sheerness to the Minster campus of the Oasis Academy.

St George's Church of England Primary School, in Chequers Road, Minster sent out the message today after becoming aware of the incident.

Called Stranger Danger, it details how a "man dressed as a policeman approached students" before school this morning.

It goes on to say he "showed a forged ID card and asked them to get into his car".

Howard Fisher, head teacher of St George's Primary School wrote: "We will be talking to children today in assembly as a reminder to them about who they can go home with to complement our usual safety lessons that occur during the year."

The Oasis Academy has been advised to alert nearby schools and inform families to be vigilant, according to the letter.

Police confirmed they were called at around 9.20am.

A force spokesman said: "The incident is reported to have happened earlier in the morning and no physical contact, or threats to cause harm, have been reported.

"Initial inquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing."

An Oasis Academy spokesman said: "Our first priority is the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff whilst at school, travelling to and from the academy, and in our wider community.

"If ever we become aware of an instance where a member of our academy community may be unsafe, our staff follow our strict safeguarding protocols to swiftly address the issue.

"We are aware of an incident where two students were approached on the way to school this morning, which has been reported to the police."
