A children’s TV star has helped launch a new education hub about Sheppey’s history.

Mister Maker visited the Blue Town Heritage Centre on Monday to entertain youngsters from Halfway Houses Primary School.

Sixty of them were there to join in with a question and answer session and they all made cards for him and were each given a card back with his autograph on.

He was there to celebrate the official opening of the new educational resource centre.

The upstairs of the building in High Street, Blue Town, has been turned into a replica of the deck of the HMS Victory, which was fitted out at Sheerness Docks and people will be able to learn about Sheppey’s past there.

Owner Jenny Hurkett has big plans for it, and is hoping to eventually be able to put together tailored lesson plans for schools, depending on what particular aspect of the Island’s history they are learning about.

She said: “It went very well and Mister Maker was excellent.

“He was so impressed he said he wants to come back and put on a show next year.

“His grandparents lived in Maple Street, Sheerness, and his dad was born on the Island – so we gave him a Sheppey passport.”
