Traffic is soon to start travelling on a new road built next to the A249 as more closures loom for work on the £92 million revamp of one of Kent's busiest junctions.

National Highways has confirmed several closures throughout June so work can continue on the Stockbury Roundabout flyover project which is expected to ease traffic along a busy route connecting Sheppey, Sittingbourne and Maidstone.

From 6am on Thursday, June 1, until 8pm on Saturday, June 3, Oad Street will be closed between the A249 and Woodgate Lane.

A National Highways spokesman said: “This route will be closed while we surface the road and tie into our work on the new Maidstone Road link.

“You will be able to join the A249 from Pett Lane, but there will be no access from the A249 to Pett Lane.

“Access will be provided for properties within the closure, please approach the closure point for an escort. This is for access only.”

The next planned closure is from 8pm on Friday, June 9, until 5am on Monday, June 12.

The spokesman explained: “We’ll soon be moving traffic travelling south on the A249 towards the Stockbury roundabout onto the new road that has been built next to the old carriageway. This will allow us to start on the north side of the flyover.

“To get the road ready, the Maidstone-bound A249 between Bobbing and the Stockbury roundabouts will be closed from 8pm Friday, June 9, to 5am on Monday, June 12.”

During the closure, traffic will be diverted via Maidstone Road from the Key Street roundabout.

The link to the Stockbury roundabout from Maidstone Road will be temporarily reopened for southbound traffic during this closure, then close permanently.

When the road reopens on Monday 12 June, Maidstone-bound traffic will use the new carriageway.

Separate from the Stockbury Flyover scheme National Highways are also resurfacing part of the M2.

Part of the road between junctions 4 and 5 will be closed overnight from 8pm until 6am the following morning on two occasions over the next month.

These closures will take place on the coastbound carriageway from Tuesday, May 30, until Friday, June 2.

The second closure will take place on the London-bound carriageway from Monday, June 12, until Thursday, June 15.

However, this closure will start at 10pm on June 12.
