A MP has said he is ashamed to be part of the House of Commons as he feels Brexit is being betrayed.

Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Gordon Henderson has said he would change sides and vote in favour of the Prime Minister’s deal to leave the EU.

It comes as speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, said on Monday he would not let Theresa May put her agreement, which will see the UK leave the EU with a deal, a third time in its current form.

Mr Henderson said: “I am certainly ashamed to be part of the House of Commons as the majority of members are trying to overturn the stated will of the people who elected me to Parliament.

“Sixty-five percent of my constituency voted to leave the EU and they are being betrayed by a number of members of Parliament who simply do not seem to be able to accept that vote.

“I am ashamed to say I am powerless to defeat them because they are being aided by the speaker and opposition parties and it is frustrating.

“Judging by the statement that the speaker made, he is doing everything in his power to prevent a deal because he has ruled that he will not accept any meaningful deal unless it is different from the previous one.

“By its very nature it cannot be different because there has been no further concessions from the EU.

“I have come to the conclusion that despite having severe reservations about the Withdrawal Agreement, if it is a choice between voting for that agreement or losing Brexit - and I fear they are the only two options we have left - then I will vote for it.

“My only priority is trying to ensure that those people who voted Brexit are not betrayed any more.”

Mr Henderson added that he was left angry but wanted to continue as an MP.

He said: “Whilst I am ashamed to be a member of this Parliament, I am not ashamed to be a representative of the people of Sittingbourne and Sheppey.

“I am determined to get what they voted for.”
