Robbery victim Gaynor Layzell

by Emma Grove

The owner of one of the Island’s most popular clubs has spoken of the terrifying moment she was punched in the face by a masked robber before he made off with the night’s takings.
Gaynor Layzell, who runs Layzells in The Broadway, Minster, with her husband Trevor, was attacked in the driveway of her home after finishing work for the night.
Mrs Layzell has told how they had an unusually busy day at the club on Saturday before she and her husband drove home.
They left at 3.15am on Sunday – Mrs Layzell drove and Mr Layzell was in the passenger seat as they made their way home to Appleford Drive, about a mile from the club.
She pulled into the driveway at about 3.20am and as she went to open the door, it was yanked open by a man in a black balaclava and gloves.
The 44-year-old was still sitting in the driver’s seat when she was punched in the cheek by the man before he said “hand it over”.
She instantly threw her bag which had the night’s “substantial” takings in, at the man as she knew he was after the money and because of her two young children, she decided it was not worth fighting.
She was also terrified he could be armed.
