Safety reminder over inflatables

A warning over using inflatables at sea has come from Sheppey coastguards after two people were reported to be in difficulties off Minster Leas.
Although the Sheerness inshore lifeboat crew found the two people fishing from an inflatable dinghy and in no trouble, coastguards have issued a reminder over the dangers.
The incident happened on Friday afternoon.
Rescue officer Ian Goodwin said: “People need to be aware of the danger of wind and tides and to tether inflatables to something on the beach.
“Although these things are for enjoyment, they can pose an awful threat – they can be picked up by the wind and taken out to sea very quickly indeed.
"There are lots of people on the beach who enjoy the use of these items but do not appreciate how dangerous they can be if not used with caution.
“Inflatable toys, airbeds and dinghies are fun, but a bad idea when used in the sea – they are much safer in swimming pools.”
