Sheppey set to finish their Kent 1 season at Gillingham Anchorians

Sheppey Rugby Club bid to round off their remarkable Kent 1 season with a revenge victory at Gillingham Anchorians on Saturday.

When Sheppey slumped to a 59-19 home defeat to Anchorians on the opening day of the campaign back in September, it set the pattern for a miserable run which saw Frank Davis’s side lose 10 of their opening 11 league matches.

But since Christmas, revitalised Sheppey have won eight out of 10 league games, moving from bottom of the table to seventh in the process.

Davis (pictured) believes that a last-game victory over Anchorians would underline just how much his side have improved.

He said: "When we played Anchorians in the first game, we didn’t have people like John Kelly and Steve Croall who have become key players for us. We are a different team now.

"Before Christmas we had the losing habit, now we have got the winning habit and it’s all about confidence.

"We have lost five games by less than five points this season and with those extra 10 points we would have been right in the mix at the top"

Sheppey were without a fixture on Saturday and Davis took the opportunity to watch Anchorians against Beccehamian. He said: "Although Anchorians won 32-12, to be honest it was a poor game and I didn’t see anything to frighten us.

"Anchorians are a bit of an ageing side and I think we will be far too strong for them in the pack."

It’s a busy weekend for Sheppey as on Sunday they face Ashford at The Ditch in the semi-finals of the Kent Salver (noon kick-off).

Davis added: "The reason why we have brought the kick-off forward to 12 noon is that one of our players has got a Christening in the afternoon and some of the other lads in the team are also going along to it."
