Hundreds of shoppers desperate to get their hands on bargain items queued outside a new branch of Poundstretcher - and one even camped overnight.

The discount retailer opened a new store in Sheerness High Street this morning, sparking a frenzy of interest.

David Hollamby, from Minster, decided to camp out in the store's entrance to make sure he was first in line when it opened.

David Hollamby from Minster wanted a new Hoover for £15

The 46-year-old got to the store, which used to be Store Twenty One, at 6pm yesterday.

He said: "I bought my sleeping bag and slept out.

"I need to get a Hoover so that’s why I queued up today. The deal was so good, you pay £15 and get a £279.99 Hoover."

He added: "I got quite a few comments from people and some were offering me change - it was quite funny."

When asked what the weather was like, Mr Hollamby said it was "not bad at all".

He added: "I think it’s great that Poundstretcher has come to Sheppey.

"It will rejuvenate the area and bring more people to Sheerness, rather than them going outside of the town to shop."

Mr Hollamby's partner Jackie Lee, who went to the store opening this morning, said she had stayed at home in her warm bed overnight.

Speaking about Mr Hollamby camping out, she said: "It was a bit crazy of him, but he wanted the Hoover so it's up to him."

The second in line was 14-year-old Hayden Balderston, from Sheerness, who got to the store at 4am. He was with his father, Frazer.

The 47-year-old was hoping to get his hands on a double faux leather bed, worth £99.99, for just £10, and his son was going to get a Hoover.

Mr Balderston, of Delamark Road, said: "We need a hoover at home, a cordless one, and with the bed, it’s a double bed for £10 so even if it goes in the loft, for that price it’s worth it."

Shoppers were queuing past neighbouring store Savers for the opening of Sheppey's new Poundstretcher.

Store manager Ewelina Batog said she was happy with the turnout.

"The queues are really huge," she said.

"I think it's good for Sheppey, it's something new and with the discount prices as well, it's great for local families."
