Expect delays on the Sheppey Crossing this week as average speed cameras are installed.

Work began this morning and is scheduled to last all week.

Swale Cllr Mike Whiting warned: "If you use the Sheppey Crossing there will be lane closures when work starts fitting speed cameras this week. Hopefully the workers will also refresh the white lines and the cats' eyes at the same time."

Highways England confirmed there will be lane closures both ways on the A249 Sheppey Crossing between Grovehurst near Iwade and Cowstead Corner roundabout at Minster.

The stretch of road is currently subject to a 50mph temporary speed limit. Once the cameras are in place the speed will resort to the national limit of 70mph.

Work was due to begin at 9.30am today and is scheduled to finish at 4pm next Monday, March 20. Contractors are hoping to complete the £350,000 scheme by the end of the week.

When variable message signs, a weather station to monitor wind and fog and CCTV are added the bill is expected to hit £2 million.
