A student is preparing for his latest fundraising effort for a cause close to his heart.

Eben Fletcher, who has dyspraxia, has carried out several feats of physical endurance to raise awareness of the disability, which can affect co-ordination, motor skills and spatial awareness.

The former Richmond Primary, Danley and Sittingbourne Community College pupil has previously cycled 1,500 miles around Swale to raise money for Dyspraxia Foundation.

He hopes to better his previous efforts by cycling about 2,500 miles around the UK in 25 days.

The journey begins on July 20 when Eben will set off from Sheppey FM and make his way to Lands End.

From there he will go up to John O’Groats before turning back and heading to the finish line at Dyspraxia Foundation’s head office in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

The 21-year-old is about to graduate from a sports management degree at Southampton Solent University and he enjoys keeping active through football and cycling.

His real passion is handball, however, and he is the manager of the Southampton University team.

Eben hopes one day to teach sport to children with dyspraxia and other disabilities and encourage them to enjoy the fun aspects of physical activity rather than the competitive side.

His mother, Sue, of St George’s Avenue, Sheerness, said: “The cycle challenge has taken three yeas to organise.

“As Eben always says, it might take him a bit longer to do things; he might find it difficult, but he’ll always get there.

“He might have dyspraxia, but he’s not going to let it stop him.”

Before the cycle trip, the family is organising a charity auction evening, including a three course meal, at Mr India, Minster Road, Halfway, on Sunday, July 12, at 7pm.

Tickets are £20 for adults or £17.50 for children and can be purchased by calling the restaurant on 01795 666645 or Mrs Fletcher on 07825 210093.

Proceeds from the auction will go towards the cost of the challenge with any left over going to Dyspraxia Foundation.
