A teenager had to be airlifted to hospital after falling from a cliff-top on the Isle of Sheppey last night.

The 18-year-old, who was out walking on his own in Minster, was able to call the ambulance service which was able to contact the coastguard and begin rescue efforts.

The Sheppey and Medway Coastguard conducted a full search at Royal Oak Point, an area notorious for being slippery, at around 10pm and found the young man a quarter of the way down the cliff around an hour later.

Firefighters helped the coastguard crew to battle through thick undergrowth to reach him.

Once they got to him, he was treated for a head injury and assessed for spinal and neck injuries as a precaution.

He was then stabilised, packed onto an aircraft stretcher and taken to the William Harvey Hospital by the coastguard helicopter.

Kent Police confirmed the accident happened while the teenager was walking near Baldwin Road.

The rescue operation was over by 1.30am.

In 2014, holidaymakers got stuck in mud in the same area, as did a 19-year-old who was visiting the site where his grandad's ashes were scattered in 2013.
