Veterans lined up before the ceremony at Halfway cemetery on Friday

Parts of Sheerness town centre will be closed to traffic for the parade and service on Remembrance Sunday.

Organised by the Royal British Legion and supported by Swale council and the Event Marshalling Unit (EMU), the parade will set off from Sheppey College car park at 10.40am, marching round to the front of the Cenotaph in Bridge Road, for 10.45am.

The service, by Canon Arthur Houston, will include a two-minute silence and laying of wreaths.

At approximately 11.20am, the parade will leave the memorial and march the 'wrong way’ through the High Street, up to the Clock Tower and into Broadway before stopping at Holy Trinity Church.

A Remembrance service will be held at the church, after which the parade will reform in Trinity Road car park and will march into Broadway, Trinity Road and back to the car park.

The EMUs will manage road closures for short periods during the day.

These include access to Tesco and McDonald’s, Victory Street, Beach Street, Bridge Road, High Street (past the Clock Tower), Broadway, Trinity Road and car park.

After the final part of the parade, participants and guests are invited to the Co-op Club, in St George’s Avenue, Sheerness, for refreshments and a full buffet.

The Mayor of Swale, Cllr Ben Stokes, will be represented by Cllr Angela Harrison (Lab) for the parade and service.

He, along with Mayoress Cllr Sylvia Bennett, attended the annual service at the Cross of Sacrifice at the cemetery off Halfway Road, at 11am today (Friday).

Cllr Stokes said: “I hope that this Remembrance Weekend the people of Swale stand together as a symbolic gesture to say how much we are behind our brave servicemen and women who have defended, and who continue to defend, our country.

“I also hope that everyone will take the time to purchase a poppy and wear it with pride, so that we can all display our gratitude and raise money for such a worthwhile charity.”
