Two people are in police custody following a violent town centre incident yesterday evening.

Emergency services flooded into Sheerness at just after 5pm following reports that a number of people were fighting.

According to witnesses, the drama started on a train going towards Sheerness, when a man and a woman became involved in a confrontation with a family.

The trouble is then said to have spilled out of the train when it stopped, and out of the station onto Bridge Road.

Weapons, including a glass bottle, were also allegedly used, with people reporting seeing a woman with blood pouring from her face walking in the High Street.

A man was also taken to hospital after being assaulted in Bridge Road - yards from the High Street.

Today, police confirmed a 26-year-old woman and a man, 54, were arrested on suspicion of assault and remain in custody.

Facebook users described chaotic scenes in the town as police dealt with the situation.

One wrote: "Police have sealed of the pathway from beach street to passed the pub the goat there was police on patrol and who I could assume was a police photographer taking photos of the pavement outside the pub, across the road from the pub was a stretcher on the pavement didn't look to close but it seemed to be empty (sic)".

Another person commented: "There was a lady in town and her face was covered in blood."

Officers cordoned off an area of Sheerness High Street following the violent incident, which happened at just after 5pm.

Trains from Sheerness were also stopped as British Transport Police officers boarded.

A police spokesman said: "Officers and South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and one man has been taken to hospital with reported minor injuries.

"Enquiries are on-going."
