A boat has crashed into the Kingsferry Bridge.

Train services between Sittingbourne and Sheerness were suspended this afternoon as a result of the craft striking the structure.

Staff from Network Rail have been on site to assess the situation and decided the link between the Isle of Sheppey and the mainland could be reopened safely.

Southeastern, which operates services on the line across the Swale channel, had earlier warned disruption would continue until 4.30pm.

A spokesman for the train operator said: "Buses are now running in place of the train service however they will not run at the same time as the usual scheduled trains.

"Please allow more time to reach your destination this afternoon and check online journey planners for up to date information."

Trains were soon running again, once the timetable caught up following the disruption.

Passengers delayed as a result of the incident may be entitled to compensation.

Those affected are advised to keep their train ticket and make a note of their journey, as both will be required to support any claim.
