This year saw the wettest June since local records began – despite the fact no rain fell for more than half the month.

It may have felt like the wet stuff didn’t stop coming, but there were actually 18 rain-free days last month.

However, so much fell over the other 12 days it added up to a total of 109.9mm, the most amateur meteorologist Ken Beal has recorded since he started measuring in 1994.

The highest June he previously recorded was when 91.2mm fell six years ago.

Mr Beal measures rainfall every day from his home in Eastchurch and said June 2012 was already wetter than last year’s 70.7mm by just halfway through.

It is also the dampest four week period of the year – after 77.6mm came down in April.

The heaviest downpour came over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend – with 26.4mm recorded on the Saturday, June 2 and 17.8mm on Sunday, June 3.

There was also a six-day period when no rain fell – from Friday 15 to Wednesday 20 inclusive.

Mr Beal, 83, said: “It has caused quite a bit of flooding because it’s rained so much all at once – but it’s all gone now.

"We have always had times when funny things happen with the weather but it does seem to happen more often.”

Moving onto this month, Mr Beal said the expected rainfall can really vary. In recent years, July rain has been as low as 8.6mm in 2006, but reached 136.3mm in 2007.

“It would be nice if July was normal,” he added.

Last month’s heavy rain caused problems across the Island.

Residents in Castlemere Avenue, Queenborough, were counting the cost of damage after water poured into their homes and gardens.

Southern Water engineers were called out to pump out the deluge.
