Never one to do things by half, Margaret Flo McEwan is walking a mile every day to raise money for the RNLI Sheerness lifeboat station.

But to make it a bit more interesting, not to mention awkward, she is doing it wearing a pair of official RNLI yellow wellies.

She said: “I’ve raised just more than £700 so far. If I could get to £1,000 that would be absolutely fantastic!”

It is part of a national fundraiser. The lifeboat charity has asked people to walk one mile a day through May to raise money for it.

Sheerness has just taken delivery of a new £2.2m lifeboat which is is currently on trials off the coat of Sheppey. The Judith Copping Joyce will repace the George and Ivy Swanson which has served the Island for the past 26 years.

Flo will also be showcasing some of Sheppey's local history on Michael Portillo’s Great British Railway Journeys TV programme this Friday (May 21) at 6.30pm on BBC 2 when she takes Michael out to visit the Second World War Maunsell sea forts. The show was filmed earlier this year using the Queenborough-based X Pilot launch.
