A woman was taken to hospital after being injured in an incident involving an air rifle in Sheerness.

It happened near Richmond Primary School. Police were called to Richmond Street, Sheerness, at about 1.30pm Thursday.

A patrol attended after receiving reports a woman had received injuries from a pellet, and police inquires confirmed the weapon used was an ‘air weapon’.

The woman, who was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital as a precaution, is thought to be a dinner-lady at nearby Richmond Primary School.

The school immediately handed out notes to parents explaining what had happened.

The letter reads: “A serious incident involving an air rifle happened today at the junction between Richmond Street and Coronation Road.

“Although this did not happen on the school site, the matter was swiftly dealt with and all procedures concerning the safety of pupils and staff and Richmond School were followed.”

Headteacher, Marian Smith, said: "We were shocked that an incident like this happened so close to the school and would urge anyone with information to come forward."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sittingbourne Crime Unit on 01795 419182 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111
