A woman in her 60s had to be treated for smoke inhalation after a faulty iron caused a fire in her kitchen.

Firefighters were called to St George's Avenue in Sheerness earlier today after the blaze broke out.

Two fire engines were sent to the woman's home and when crews arrived they found smoke coming from the front and back of the property.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Wearing breathing apparatus the firefighters entered the home and used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"It's thought the base unit of a steam iron developed a fault, which caused the fire."

No one else was injured and crews made the house safe and left the scene shortly before 1pm.
