‘It’s disgraceful that we’re still waiting for road sign’

Worried parents and councillors are still waiting for a safety sign to be installed outside a school – three months after it was promised.
Back in February, we reported how there were concerns for children who go to Eastchurch primary’s St Clement’s Site in Leysdown Road.
The speed limit on the road is 40mph and this, added to the volume of traffic parking on grass verges at school run times, prompted a campaign to get things changed.
Although a bid by the Joint Transportation Board (JTB) to get it lowered to 30mph was successful – nothing has been done yet to make drivers aware of the new restriction.
Temporary road signs have been put up and the road markings were repainted, but Warden and Leysdown representative Cllr Pat Sandle said there is still a problem with people parking in the lay-by opposite the school and on the road.
There are also lights installed at a pelican crossing, although concerns have been raised about whether they work properly.
In February, Kent County Council (KCC) insisted an interactive sign with the limit on would be installed by March – but it has now been revealed it won’t be put up until August.
Initially, KCC said the road would not lend itself to a 30mph limit, but following the JTB’s official request, a spokesman confirmed the speed limit will be lowered.
Cllr Sandle said: “There have been problems with parking when the kids are kicking out and there is a queue of traffic every day.
“It hasn’t improved at all – cars just join the queue and you can’t see because the crossing point is right on the bend.
“It’s disgraceful really that we are still waiting for the sign.”
A KCC spokesman said: “We would like to apologise for the delay in the installation of the interactive speed sign on Leysdown Road and completely understand the frustration from local residents, especially parents with children at the school.
“We are now expecting that they will be in place by early August 2012.”
