A young eco-warrior is so fed up with the litter and dog mess – she has written a letter to voice her disgust.
Isabelle Hallett contacted MP Gordon Henderson and Minster Parish Council after reaching her wits’ end at the amount of rubbish.
The nine-year-old says it’s a problem across the Island including Sheerness high street, Eastchurch village and The Broadway, Minster.
In particular she has noticed the mess at Sheppey Community Hospital, near her home in Barton Hill Drive, Minster.
In her letter she says: “I was up at Thistle Hill fields and it was a mess – I felt like screaming.
“There were crisp wrappers, chocolate wrappers and one specific places where smokers go is the field entrance near the hospital.”
Queenborough Primary pupil Isabelle has been working with the Litter Angels charity and last week was made an eco-warrior by the school for her environmental efforts.
Her mum Rachel Hallett said: “She says to me, ‘Mummy this is disgusting. I have had enough of it. People should be putting their rubbish in bins – why can’t they be bothered to do it?’
“She was having a real rant about it – when there’s something she feels strongly about she does get quite passionate, so I said, ‘Why don’t you write a letter’.”
Parish clerk Trish Codrington said: “Swale council has been working hard to resolve the problem but it does need the public’s help – there are people out there that are not picking up after their dogs and it’s very important they stop that.
“We will continue to do all we can to remind people of their responsibilities and we will continue to support people like Isabelle who are working very hard to raise those concerns locally.”
A spokesman for Kent Community Health NHS Trust said it was looking at installing a new litter bin, adding: “We are very grateful to Isabelle for bringing this to our attention; we take all feedback from the public very seriously.”
Mr Henderson said: “We are keen to encourage young people to have an interest in their local environment and I’m delighted that Isabelle has taken on board what we are trying to teach.”
