Work has begun to restore a church roof damaged by death watch beetles.
The work on All Saints’ Church, Eastchurch, started at the end of April and is expected to be finished by August.
Wooden beams above the altar and woodwork around the front of the church were damaged by the beetles.
It came to light around three years ago when a wooden statue of an angel came loose and fell down on the spot a service would have taken place had one been in progress.
The total cost of the work will be £138,000. A grant of £88,000 has been given by English Heritage.
So far £23,000 has been raised by events which have been put on since the problem was discovered.
Another £27,000 will need to be raised to pay for the total cost of repair.
The beams and woodwork around the altar will be replaced.
Services have still been conducted in the church but the area under the damaged beams has been closed off.
Church warden Sylvia Baker said: “It will be nice when it is completed. It can be quite cramped for funerals and other things.
“We had a problem with damp in the church and apparently this makes ideal conditions for the beetle.
“They had been eating away at the wood and no-one was aware of it until the angel fell. It is a relief it is getting done and we are looking forward to getting the full use of the church.”
