Swale dog service pays tribute to Sheerness stray Liza

A dog who went blind after being found wandering the streets with serious head injuries has died.

Liza, an American bully-cross, was found in Sheerness last summer and described by Swale's dog warden, Mel Herbert, as one of their "worst welfare cases."

However, after undergoing a "phenomenal transformation" at a rescue centre, Liza died as a result of the severe damage to her head 195 days after she was saved.

In a touching tribute, Mel said: "Liza was skin and bone, bred to excess and almost completely blind when we collected her in August last year.

"When offered food, she wolfed it down like she'd never been fed and, in the beginning, she was defecating small pieces of tin foil where she'd had to scavenge to survive.

"She broke my heart more than any other dog I'd collected; bull breeds have always held a special place in my soul."

After being taken in, the pooch started to deteriorate so Mel contacted Val Phillips from Valgrays Border Collie and Animal Rescue.

Mel continued: "She agreed to help without question despite Liza being a breed she hadn't worked with before.

"It broke her heart too, but like she always does, she worked her magic.

"Liza went from strength to strength and before long, she was unrecognisable.

"This was her opportunity for a chance to live the life she'd always deserved.

"Liza loved Val and her doggy friends beyond measure. She was finally happy."

However, in December, Liza started having seizures that progressively got worse.

Mel continued: "Val always kept me updated, but it was clear the seizures were taking their toll and she was getting tired.

"She fought and fought, but eventually, it was time to say goodbye."

On Monday, February 20, with Val by her side, Liza took her last breath.

Mel added: "She was another beautiful soul with her life cut short due to the cruelty of man, devastating.

"Liza experienced 195 days of bliss and I sincerely hope she knew how much she was loved."

Val took to the charity rescue's Facebook page to share her heartache.

She said: "My beautiful Liza.

"What man had done to you was criminal but you are now at peace and I am in pieces.

"I stayed with her to cross the rainbow bridge but it was not easy."
