Coastguard officers and bomb disposal experts are currently at Minster Leas waiting to detonate a round of ammunition.

The four-inch British ammunition dates from the Second World War and was found by members of the public who were digging for bait.

Sheppey Coastguard and Royal Naval Bomb Disposal experts are at the scene now, hoping to carry out a controlled explosion.

Because it is under water, it cannot be reached at the moment and teams are waiting until the tide goes out so they can gain access to it.

It is unlikely this will happen before 7.30pm this evening, and if the light and tide are not suitable, the explosion will have to wait until tomorrow.
