Branch evacuated after cashpoint billows smoke

Firefighters were called to a cash machine which was billowing smoke at a high street bank.

A crew was called to Halifax in Sheerness at 4pm yesterday (Thursday).

Staff were evacuated from the building while firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to try and determine the source of the smoke, which was coming from a machine inside the building.

The fire was caused by an electrical fault behind the monitor.

Firefighter Peter Jones said: "The engineer told me it was the first time he had ever come across such a problem.

"Staff had to unlock the machine for us to gain access."

Branch manager Carole McDonald said: "There were no customers in the branch at the time but staff had to be evacuated."

The problem took 45 minutes to resolve.
