An MP claims he would “sue the pants off” anyone who left lewd messages about one of his family members on his answerphone in the wake of the Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross saga.
Sittingbourne and Sheppey MP Derek Wyatt (Lab) feels so strongly that comments made by the comedy pair on Radio 2 were wrong that he has written to the BBC’s director general Mark Thompson and the chair of the BBC Trust Sir Michael Lyons.
Mr Wyatt joins a growing number of people angry about the BBC’s decision to broadcast a radio show on October 18 in which Brand and Ross left crude messages on the answerphone of former Faulty Towers actor Andrew Sachs.
In one, references are made to Brand having slept with Sachs’ granddaughter, burlesque performer Georgina Baillie.
The Labour MP said: “Trust is one of the most fundamental things and the BBC’s delay in doing anything about these disgusting comments is surely an abuse of that trust.
“This has festered for a whole week and, worse still, who on earth decided to broadcast this in the first place?
“If it was my daughter or granddaughter I would sue the pants off them. It is absolutely disgusting.”
The BBC has since suspended the pair and is investigating.
