The Sheppey Crossing reopened almost four hours after it was shut following a crash.
Police were called to the collision, involving two cars, on the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway at about 6.20am.
A police spokesman said the closure was to allow highways teams to deal with an oil spillage, although there was no sign of any clear-up more than two hours after the crash.
A diversion was directing traffic over the Kingsferry Bridge.
Highways England, which is responsible for the crossing, said it was not involved with the closure.
A spokesman said: "Highways England hasn’t be involved at all with this incident. We were made aware of the closure by the police, but it is something they’re dealing with."
The authority also tweeted to say there had been "no substantial delays reported" due to the closure, despite many roads on the Island being gridlocked.
During this morning's rush hour, traffic was queuing back to Brambledown along the Lower Road and to Queenborough Corner on the A249.
Cars were also tailing back to past the Harps Inn in Minster Road, Minster.
One woman sustained minor injuries in the crash.
Police said the crossing reopened at 9.47am.
