The Sittingbourne-bound carriageway of the Sheppey Crossing was closed this afternoon just days after the introduction of a 50mph limit.

Three cars and a motorcycle collided at the brow of the bridge at 4.45pm.

Police and ambulance crews were called but it is understood there are no serious injuries.

The A249 approaching it was closed off at the new Cowstead Corner roundabout with mainland-bound traffic diverted over the Kingsferry Bridge.

Sheppey-bound traffic was still able to use the crossing but the incident had major knock-on effects with people trying to get into the Lower Road.

The accident comes just days after Highways England slashed the 70mph speed limit by 20mph following advice from the police.

This followed the deaths of Deborah and Marshall Roberts on July 1 last year. The mother and son died when their car was hit by a flat-bed truck.
