Campers at Shingle Bank in Sheerness help put out grass fire

A fire which broke out last night had to be put out by nearby campers.

Firefighters were called to a part of an undergrowth on fire in Marine Parade, Sheerness, at around 8.15pm.

Mark Reddick, who was camping in the area at Shingle Bank, said: “It was lucky there were some people up there enjoying the bank that saved it before the fire crews got there to soak the ground.”

A fire service spokesman added: “One fire engine attended and crews used a hose reel jet to extinguish the flames.

“There were no reported injuries and the cause is not yet known.”
