Generous Islanders have cheered up members of a disabled children’s charity with almost £200 of donations after one of their collection boxes was stolen.
Last week, we reported how the box, which belongs to Sheppey-based Ribbons, was stolen from a kiosk at Beachfields Park, Sheerness.
But within hours of the paper hitting the streets, we started getting calls from people wanting to donate to the charity.
All the donors wanted to remain anonymous.
They included a couple from Queenborough who phoned up to give £80 to the charity.
The man said he was very upset by the theft.
One woman from Sheerness rang up to offer a £20 donation.
Another man from Rushenden, gave £100 to Ribbons.
He said: “I read the story and thought it was disgusting. I’m in a position to help so I thought I would.”
We also had a letter from an anonymous donor in Minster with a £5 note inside to pass on.
June Vargerson, founder of the charity, said she thought the donations were lovely.
She said: “It’s really, really lovely that out of evil, because it was an evil thing that happened, comes some good.”
We have also set up a donation box for Ribbons in the Times Guardian office.
