How would you like to treat a neighbour to a community cuppa?

Kent County Council wardens have teamed up Morrisons supermarket at Neats Court, Queenborough, on the Isle of Sheppey to offer tea for two to Islanders who have shown "outstanding community spirit" during the coronavirus lockdown.

Organiser Jackie Swan, community warden for Minster, said: "I work alongside two other wardens, Dave Osborne in Sheerness and Debbie Foreman in Leysdown, and between us we cover the whole of the Island.

"We are working with Morrisons to set up a scheme so people can nominate a neighbour to receive a free afternoon tea for two.

"It will reward individuals who have shown outstanding community spirit during this pandemic but also serve as a pick-me-up to those who may have had a tough time, too.

"It is a great opportunity to give praise to those who deserve it and at the same time give a smile to those who might need need cheering up.

"It also highlights what community wardens are doing across the Island. We have been busier than ever during the lockdown visiting the vulnerable and making sure they are are OK."

Jackie, a former school teacher, added: "This pandemic has really gelled the community together. We wanted to celebrate that."

Morrisons' community champions Zoe Stevens and Naomi Oulds are putting the teas together. Zoe said: "It is our way of giving something back to the community."

The store's team has been busy distributing supplies to food banks at Queenborough, Holy Trinity Church Sheerness, Curly's Farm near Leysdown and, most recently, pizza kits for Oasis Academy families.

Three tea treats will be awarded every month.

Nominations need to be made between the first and 14th of the month to give the team time to pick the winners.

The afternoon teas for two normally cost £10 and include a selection of sandwiches, pork pies, fruit scones. clotted cream, jam and cakes all served with Yorkshire Tea.

They will be delivered direct to the winners' front doors.

The take-away teas are also available to buy separately from Morrisons.
