A mum fighting to get treatment for a devastating neurological illness has been given yet another boost by her army of supporters following a fundraising football match.

Reality TV personalities Dan Osborne, from The Only Way is Essex, Ben Jardine of Married at First Sight and Celebrity Big Brother fame, and Big Brother housemate Danny Wisker were among the stars who made up a team of Summa Barker’s family and friends.

They took on Range Rovers in front of a crowd of more than 600 people at Sheppey United’s home ground Holm Park on Sunday, clinching victory after the game went to penalties.

Summa, of Swale Avenue, Rushenden, was forced to find her own way of funding vital treatment for Susac’s Syndrome, a rare condition with symptoms similar to multiple sclerosis.

The 23-year-old’s health began deteriorating in 2017.

Since then the former hairdresser has tragically lost the use of both her legs and her left arm and has suffered severe hearing and memory loss.

At one point she was unable to recognise her daughter Jasmine, now three years old.

While there is no known cure, doctors believe that receiving intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) will significantly improve her quality of life.

She was told she could not get the treatment on the NHS because of its £32,500 cost but her family brought the situation back from the brink of disaster when they managed to raise the staggering sum to get her the injections privately in just 17 days. However, the fundraising mission has continued to bring in money for extras such as physiotherapy and a wheelchair.

The event brought in another £3,000 - raising the total to £42,500.

Summa’s cousin Holli Godden said: “The day was amazing, it was brilliant. We had so many people turn out and so much support. Every time we see people commenting on social media or supporting us I can’t put into words how I feel.

“I want to thank everyone again because we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for their help. I know people slate the Island but I don’t think there’s another community out there like this.”

The game has been just one part of a huge ongoing campaign to raise money.

A group of ramblers managed to collect £210 during a sponsored walk as they journeyed from pub to pub with collection tins doing their bit.

The group visited the Rushenden Club and then ventured into Queenborough and Halfway on Sunday, February 10.

To celebrate smashing their target and to say thank you, the family have organised an afternoon of fun and festivities.

All are invited to Sheerness Co-op Club in St George’s Avenue a disco, prize raffle, and burger van from 4pm on Saturday, March 9.
