Sheerness: Child finds maggots in food at Richmond Primary Academy

A child at a primary school in Kent was served sweetcorn with her school dinner only to find it was covered in maggots.

According to a witness, the dinner lady at Richmond Primary Academy in Sheerness allegedly brushed the maggots off before handing the food back to a pupil after they complained.

A Stour Academy Trust spokesman said: “Following an incident on May 23, with sweetcorn, the following steps were taken as soon as it was found.

"The sweetcorn was immediately removed and a member of the senior leadership team was informed, who sat with the child to ensure that she was not upset by the incident.

“The manufacturer has been informed and the product has gone back for testing.

"The environmental health officer has visited and investigated and is happy that all procedures were correctly followed; as soon as the sample has been tested the manufacturers will release a statement.

“A routine inspection carried out by Swale council at the end of February this year reported that standards were very good.”

The school has the highest food hygiene rating of five.
