A rare 1930 Model-A Ford is making its British debut at the Sheerness Classic Music and Motors Show in the town centre on Saturday.

The vintage car was owned by Baylor University in Houston, Texas, for more than 40 years.

It was imported into the UK in 2013, and is now owned by grandad Derrick Wareham from Bay View, Leysdown.

Mr Wareham, 73, said: “There are only a few of these in Britain and this will be the first time I have exhibited her in public.

“She still drives very well for an old girl.”

Also in Saturday’s line-up will be a specially-built 1959 Bentley S-type racing car in British racing green owned by Sheppey musician and former motorcycle stuntman William Wallace.

Mr Wallace, 68, from Seager Road, Sheerness, said: “It was originally built by my ex-father-in-law Len Wilton.

“He was at a race meeting with other Bentley owners who were racing Mk VI cars and he said he wanted to race an S-Type.

“They told him it was impossible so he went away and built his own. “It ended up breaking the lap record twice at the Goodwood racing circuit in 1977 and then, after he had made his point, he mothballed it for 25 years.”

Sheerness Town Team chairman John Nurden said an overflow area had been booked in Beachfields opposite McDonald’s to cater for the number of cars booked for the show.

He said: “This should certainly make a trip to the shops more fun and is a great way of taking a trip down memory lane seeing E-Type Jaguars, Porsches, Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Chevrolets, Mercedes and family favourites such as Morris Minors, Triumphs and Fords.”

Chris West, of Classic Music and Motors, which runs similar events across Kent, said: “We have wanted to stage an event on the Isle of Sheppey for a long time – our exhibitors love a trip to the seaside.”

As well as cars, from 11am there will be entertainment featuring fun rock band the Rockin’ Decades, Herne Bay crooner Martin Farbrother plus special guests in the Broadway.

The High Street and Broadway will be closed to traffic from 7am to 6pm.

The show, which also includes retro stalls and other attractions, runs from 10.30am to 4pm.
