Is this the end of the road for the road at Warden Point?

Kent Highways has fenced it off, blocking public access to the cliffs.

The emergency barriers were installed on Thursday on the advice of police.

Wally Hill, 87, who lives next to the barrier, said: "I don't know why they closed the road but the council workers who put up the barrier told me a cyclist had ridden over the edge.

"There was a bollard at the top of the cliffs the other day which had been covered in red tape."

He said there were also rumours the road had been closed after a missing woman was found on the beach.

A spokesman for Kent Highways said: "Kent Police requested it was fenced off."

But police said they could find no details of any incident in Eastchurch, Leysdown or Warden Point which could have called for the road closure.

Over the years, many homes at Warden have tumbled into the sea because of coastal erosion.

One of the most high-profile casualties was the late union leader Hugh Scanlon's bungalow which slid down the cliffs.

Lord Scanlon of Davyhulme, as he became, was president of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers and took on Prime Minister Harold Wilson in the 1978 "Winter of Discontent."
