A former fire station has been sold at auction for more than the asking price.

A mystery buyer paid £88,000 for the property in Whiteway Road, Queenborough, last week.

The detached station building, which was shut in March, had a freehold guide price of between £60,000 and £70,000.

It was put up for sale when a three-year review of Kent Fire and Rescue Service found it was not needed as Sheppey crews could respond just as quickly.

Clive Emson Auctioneer’s John Stockey said there had been keen interest in the building due to its quirky nature.

“It offers potential for a variety of uses, subject to all the necessary consents being obtainable,” he added.

The station was one of 84 lots offered at the auction.

A semi-detached house in Edward Road, Queenborough, went for £72,000 and land adjacent to Kingsborough Cottages in Eastchurch Road, Eastchurch, with planning permission for two homes fetched £96,000.
