Worried homeowners are asking Swale council to reconsider its proposal to install a coach parking bay in one of Sheppey’s most popular roads.
Dozens of residents of The Leas, Minster, have signed a petition against the plan for a space outside numbers 11 and 12 over concerns about safety and their views being destroyed.
The council is consulting residents and Yvonne Squire, of number 11 The Leas, says most of her neighbours support her campaign against the space.
The 65-year-old says people are concerned about the congestion it will cause on an already busy road.
She says it is difficult for residents to access their drives as it is and a bigger vehicle parked there will make it worse.
The grandmother-of-five is also worried about families crossing and says a coach would make it more dangerous.
She also said larger vehicles already had to go up on the pavements to fit past, which was causing damage, and this would happen more often if coaches were parked there.
“It will be extremely dangerous and increases the likelihood of an accident,” she said.
“A coach bay is going to cause congestion and make a visitor’s experience not a positive one and they won’t come back if they experience frustration.
“The houses directly impacted will lose their view and be devalued – it will cause great problems and will blight my life.”
She has suggested an alternative would be for coaches to use the green area next to Barton’s Point, near the boat park, as there is space for turning.
There is also a proposal for a bay in Blue Town, which Jenny Hurkett who runs the heritage centre has praised.
She said: “It’s really important for the Island and we are welcoming it.
“We have been waiting for this for ages.”
The Joint Transportation Board (JTB) will consider residents’ views and concerns. It is likely to be discussed at a meeting on Monday, December 9.
