Generous entertainers donated money towards a wheelchair for a disabled child that will help to improve her quality of life.
Ezmae Catley, who is 21 months, has epilepsy, brain damage and dystonia – a neurological disorder that causes frequent muscle contractions.
She is also fed through a tube in her stomach because she cannot suck or swallow.
When Paul Rogers, who is the MC at Merlin’s Entertainment Complex, in Leysdown, read about fundraising efforts to buy her equipment she will need for the rest of her life, he asked his friends to help.
The Sheppey performer is a member of the Comedians Golfing Society, which has been helping people in need for 35 years.
Members usually meet for a charity competition once a month.
The group sent a cheque for £609 which will go towards a hood, rain cover and other accessories to add to Ezmae’s new wheelchair, which arrived on October 31. Islanders have helped the tot’s mother Claire Morrish, 33, of Minster Road, Minster, to raise the £3,000 needed to buy the specialist piece of equipment, which should last until she is six or seven.
She said: “It has made a huge difference already. She has got so much more support. She can actually sit upright and see what’s going on around her rather than being on the floor.
“Before I didn’t want to go out for walks with her because she was crammed in her pram. Now she’s got room to grow and just go out and do general stuff.
“It reclines to a height that is suitable for Ezmae or it can go down flat. We can put it in the car and she can travel in it so it is just fantastic. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of everybody and we can never thank them enough. It’s amazing how everyone comes together.”
Miki Travis, chairman of the Comedians Golfing Society, said: “We are very proud of what we do and we all like to help where we can.”
More fundraisers to buy additional equipment for Ezmae, including a cushioned floor chair called a P Pod, are coming up.
A ladies-only night at the Royal Hotel, Sheerness, tonight from 6pm
will be donating some of its proceeds.
