Cooker scam warning

A scam involving cooker warranties is being investigated by police.

Several concerned Islanders have contacted them over the last few days to report that a man, purporting to be genuine Island trader Brian Spoor, has rung them.

Well-known Mr Spoor, 60, who runs a cooker and other home appliance business from Beach Street, Sheerness, has also taken calls from concerned customers.

He said: "I am horrified that someone is taking my name in vain. It must be someone who knows me or my business which is even more upsetting."

One of those affected is Gloria Scowen, 77, from Minster, who said: "I took a call at 10.15pm on Tuesday night (Jan 6) which I thought was a very odd time to ring. The man said he was Brian Spoor and the warranty on my cooker was about to expire and he asked me if I would like to renew it. I don't even have a cooker from Mr Spoor.

"The man then rang my daughter who knows Mr Spoor and she said it was definitely not his voice."

A police spokesman said: "We are investigating these incidents."
