Community chef Mike Spackman challenged Kent County Council (KCC) leader Councillor Paul Carter to test his cooking.

Mike was chosen by the public to take on the role of community chef and before taking to the streets of Sheppey in the coming months to meet people, he decided to challenge Cllr Carter to cook up a healthy breakfast – the most important but commonly missed meal of the day.

Last Thursday the official launch of the community chef project took place at the Sheppey Healthy Living Centre, off Broadway, Sheerness.

Mike said: “It went very well. Paul had his own slant on making an omelette.

“We wanted to show people you can get a healthy start and it doesn’t have to take more than five minutes.”

Mike and Paul were also joined by children from Rose Street Primary School, who helped with the breakfast.

The community chef project is supported by KCC, East Kent Coastal Primary Care Trust and Sheppey Matters and the idea is to increase cooking confidence and promote dietary changes among the community.

Mike will deliver a range of training sessions for professionals, adults and children to promote healthy eating.

He also aims to influence eating habits and equip people with practical food preparation skills which can be easily transferred to the home.
