Helen Knell from Sheppey is campaigning for a cycle track in Lower Road, Minster

A woman has set up an email address to gain support for a cycle track in Lower Road.

As previously reported, Helen Knell started the campaign after she was almost knocked off her bike along the busy Minster route.

The 63-year-old retired teacher is a member of the Cyclist Touring Club.

She is anxious to rally other two-wheeled enthusiasts to join her crusade because she said Lower Road was the only “reasonable” option for people to pedal between the Island’s east end and the mainland.

It follows an incident in November in which her handlebar was clipped by the wing mirror of a car trying to overtake her as she cycled from Cowstead Corner to Barton Hill Drive.

The grandmother, of Cliff Gardens, Minster, said: “I would like to see a cycle track rather than a cycle lane.

“I understand the constraints everyone is under, but when there is enough money available something needs to be done.”

A KCC spokesman said the local authority would consider requests for road improvements as long as residents checked if there had been any crashes involving personal injury in the past three years.
