A dad has committed to walking almost 300 miles to raise awareness of the disease that took his nan’s life.
Darryl Hunter will set off from his home in New Road, Minster, today (Saturday) on a trek to Clitheroe, Lancashire.
Along the way he will be raising awareness and funds for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.
Macmillan has supported people living with cancer and their families for more than 100 years.
Mr Hunter’s nan, Elizabeth Carr, lost her battle with breast cancer earlier this month at the age of 83.
“I’m doing this walk for my nan,” Mr Hunter explained.
“I want her to be remembered and I want to inspire other people to get out there and do things for charity too.”
The father-of-one added: “Every one of us has lost something, and now I am trying to give something back to a charity that can support people and their families through a horrible time.”
Mr Hunter said he planned the trek with the aim of raising at least £1,000 for Macmillan.
He said: “I chose to walk from my house to Clitheroe, which is well over 270 miles, because my mum lives there and it’s her mum that passed away.
“My target is £1,000 but I’m hoping to raise much, much more, hopefully £10,000.”
Mr Hunter expects to complete the challenge within two to three weeks, walking an average of 20 miles a day.
“I have been training during the night and the day – running and hiking up and down different terrains to prepare for this stretch.
“I haven’t done anything like this before, but I’m quite excited now.”
So far, Mr Hunter has raised £88. To donate, click here.
