A charity runner who has committed himself to running a minimum of 10 kilometres a day for three years will be joined by Dame Kelly Holmes on his 500th day.
Lee Allen, 39, from Queenborough, started running on New Year’s Eve last year to raise money for Kent Sports Trust (KST).
He originally aimed to complete 10km a day for 366 days before upping his game to 478 days after being awarded a place in this month’s London Marathon, which would have marked the last day.
After discussing it with KST and its CEO Steve Wolfe, who is joining Lee on his challenge but running 5km a day, the pair decided to raise the bar even higher to 1,096 days – three years.
Lee, a patron of KST and procurement specialist for South East Water, said: "The thing is, about this challenge, it’s not only about me, it’s about inspiring other people.
"I’ve had 112 people run with me since I started and quite a lot of them weren’t running this time last year.
"For example, I started up a running group at work last January and we've got close to 60 members now."
He added: "Recently, we had the Dartford Half Marathon and 10 people from our South East Water group entered and they all got round it successfully.
"That makes me more proud to see them achieve that than what I am actually doing myself."
On Monday, May 14, Lee will have been running for 500 days without a break and, to celebrate, he will be joined on his run by Dame Kelly Holmes, who is an ambassador for KST.
He said: "Kelly thinks I'm a great inspiration having got over 100 different people running side by side with me over the last year, as well as losing 38 pounds in weight and changing my whole attitude to life."
He added: "Kelly pledged to run on day 500 in front of a big audience at the KST Gala a few months ago, along with fellow ambassador Ben Smith who recently completed 401 marathons in as many days, whist raising over £300,000 for anti-bullying charities.
"Since then Steve and I have been busy planning and it promises to be a wonderful day."
The 5km run will take place at Leeds Castle in Maidstone on Monday, May 14. It will start at 11am.
Entry will cost £10 per person. To book, click here
Lee has so far raised over £3,600 for KST.
He said: “With the money, we hope to invest it into a variety of things such as sport equipment for schools and local clubs.”
