Islanders have until Friday to give their views about a planned shake-up of children’s centres.

Kent County Council is hoping to save around £1.5 million by making changes to the services.

Twenty centres in other part of the county are facing closure.

In Sheppey, Beaches in Leysdown and Lilypad in Minster are on a list of 13 which could be run on a part-time basis.

Any changes are likely to be implemented in the new year.

The district children’s centre manager for Swale, Guy Bartlett, said Kent County Council’s cabinet member for specialist children’s services, Jenny Whittle, who will make the final decision, is due to visit the Island.

She will be at Seashells Children and Families’ Centre in Sheerness on Wednesday from 10am to hear people’s views.

Mr Bartlett said if the centres were changed to run on reduced hours, it would be at around 18 hours a week.

Although the proposals in this area are not for closures, he appreciates it could have an impact.

He said: “We are aware having to go to another venue can cause problems and not everyone has access to cars, so I would ask everyone, even if you haven’t got children, to please have a look [at the consultation] and respond.”

Lilypad has been closed since October due to a problem with flooding. It is hoped it will reopen early next year.
