A mum says she will not give up trying to make the road she lives in safer after highways bosses said they would not act on her petition, which called for traffic calming measures.
Jacinta Hernandez started a campaign last August to get the measures implemented in St Helen’s Road, Sheerness. The 68-year-old, who has lived there nearly 30 years, said she was scared someone would be killed if nothing was done.
The petition, which got 90 signatures from the road’s 71 homes, was presented to Swale council before being passed to Kent County Council’s (KCC) highways department.
However, a KCC spokesman said it did not plan to take any action. He said: “At this stage, we have no programmed works on these roads, although we will continue to monitor the site and, should viable engineering solutions be identified that would reduce the number and the severity of crashes, then we will seek to implement them.”
Mrs Hernandez, who’s had her car damaged three times while parked outside her home, said the majority of people she had spoken to concerning the petition had had their cars damaged.
“The road is in constant use and people use it like a motorway, they speed along it,” she said. “They drive down here like maniacs half the time. I’m scared someone is going to get killed.”
Mrs Hernandez, whose son was left paralysed after a crash in Sheerness 20 years ago, said she was not happy with KCC’s response: “You can understand how this speed gets to me. I wouldn’t want anyone to go through what we went through with my son.
“Something needs to be done because this isn’t going to get any better, it’s going to get worse. What does it take to put up a sign each end of the road with a 30mph limit? We pay our rates, we should be entitled to live in a safe environment. I’m going to carry on trying to get something done.”
