Sheppey community interest company Recre8 is now looking to run workshops for between eight and 12 young unemployed people to teach them how to make jewellery from old circuit boards.

Participants who complete training will receive a national arts award from Tony Duke.

Hobbyist Lyn Baseley, who has sold some of her creations at craft fairs in the past, will be holding the sessions. She contacted Recre8 founder Andrew Deeley, from Minster, after he put an appeal on the company’s Facebook page.

She said: “I have made prototypes of some of the jewellery pieces and now we want to train some young people in making them so they can eventually find employment or make some money out of it.”

Mr Deeley has already tested out the concept of upcycling – finding new uses for reclaimed materials – through an existing product, which is a wallet made from old fire hoses.

The technology room at the Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey east site, in Minster Road, Minster, where Mrs Baseley works as a pastoral manager, is the workshop venue.
