Sheppey couple Garry and Kyle Ratcliffe holding fundraiser for son Curtis who has severe cerebral palsy

A family who won the nation’s hearts after appearing on DIY SOS are hosting their first charity event in a bid to help others in need.

Garry and Kyle Ratcliffe, who had their Sheppey home transformed by the BBC team, decided to do something to help other families after Donations with a Difference gave them thousands of pounds to buy a wheelchair that would transform the life of their seven-year-old son.

Curtis, whose nickname is Curly, has severe cerebral palsy, epilepsy, scoliosis, hip dysplasia and is blind.

His dads, who also set up a farm school in September called Curly’s Farm, want to use any profits made to buy a static caravan and give other families in a similar situation a well-deserved holiday.

To add to the pot, they are hosting a dinner and dance in April.

Kyle, 40, said: “We decided that after our truly amazing DIY SOS experience that we wanted to give something back.

“We want to buy a static caravan, site it on an Isle of Sheppey holiday park and give free holidays to children with disabilities, children in the care system, those leaving care, as well as adults with learning disabilities that still live at home with their parents.

“Our hope is to give families some respite, enable them to build memories and have fun together as a family.

“To do this, we need people’s support and help.”

Kyle and Garry, former head teacher at Milton Court School in Milton Regis, appeared on DIY SOS in October 2016, when Nick Knowles and his team of ‘purple shirts’ created a purpose-built home in Brambledown for them and their four adopted children, three of whom have life-limiting medical conditions.

On Saturday, April 6, the couple will host a dinner and dance at Sheerness Golf Club.

It has been organised by Nathan Wood of Sittingourne-based Farmwood, who was part of the original DIY SOS build.

The evening will consist of a two-course carvery meal, live music from five-piece indie rock band Shaken Albert, an auction and a disco and dance.

Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

“We would love as many people to join us as possible,” Kyle said.

“But, also, people and companies could support the event by donating a prize for the raffle or auction.

"Any donation would make such a difference.”

Tickets, £30, from 01795 857840 or 07875 507937.
